• Call for Articles from AERA SIG Online Teaching and Learning – Special Issue of Online Learning

  2026-04-09

  Online Learning invites accepted presenters from the 2026 AERA OTL SIG to submit manuscripts for a special issue extending conference work into a peer-reviewed publication. We welcome qualitative, quantitative, mixed methods, and review studies on online and blended learning, including engagement, instructional innovation, AI and analytics, accessibility/UDL, and learner success.

  Invited authors will submit via OJS and serve as reviewers. Manuscripts should be 6,000–8,000 words and follow APA 7 (OLJ format).

  Key Dates: Intent to submit: April 27, 2026 | Full submission: June 1, 2026

• Announcing Release of OLJ Special Issue on AERA Online Teaching and Learning SIG

  The Online Learning Journal December 2023 Special Issue includes research papers from members of the Online Teaching and Learning (OTL) Special Interest Group (SIG) of the American Educational Research Association (AERA). This influential SIG of AERA provides 200-plus members an informative platform to discuss and disseminate challenges and possibilities relating to online learning and teaching. The 16 papers selected for this issue represent innovative and diverse topics using various research methods. Dr. Patrick Lowenthal of Boise State University and Dr. Robert Moore of the University of Florida served as guest editor for this special issue and have grouped articles into five themes: 1. Measurement and analysis; 2. Equity, Inclusion, Advocacy, Embodiment; 3. Modality; 4. Openness; and 5. Philosophy & Theory.

  In addition to the special issue from the AERA Online Teaching and Learning SIG, the December issue of the OLJ includes five articles from our regular submission process. These articles cover a broad range of topics including the evolving role of writing centers in support of online learners, humanizing online pedagogy, learner readiness in online and other digital contexts, and an intriguing investigation of online and classroom student outcomes. 

  Many thanks to Patrick Lowenthal and Rob Moore for their work on the special issue of the journal.  Many hours were devoted to curating, communicating, and editing this extensive issue and we are grateful for all of their efforts.  Also a huge thank you to our other editors, authors, reviewers, copyeditors and the staff at OLC for their many contributions to support the success of the journal.

• Call for Papers: Online and Blended Learning in the Age of Generative AI

  The advent of generative artificial intelligence (AI) has ignited considerable excitement, largely attributed to its ability to generate original content through natural language processing (NLP) and comprehensive language models (LLM). The main reason for this excitement is the potential of generative AI to comprehend and produce human language in a similar manner to a human being, considered one of the most intricate and advanced systems in existence (Bozkurt, 2023). Given this, we cannot ignore, resist, or deny the continuous influence of generative AI technologies. The capacity of these generative AI agents to employ human language for communication, interaction, and crafting human-like responses suggests a potential shift in the prevailing educational paradigm.

Since 2016, Online Learning (OLJ) has dedicated a special issue to publish the year’s best research from the American Educational Research Association’s Online Teaching and Learning Special Interest Group (AERA-OTL SIG). This year’s special issue presents a diverse selection of high-quality research on a broad range of topics using an array of research methods. In addition to having the opportunity to present at the conference, we select the top research papers for inclusion in the annual Online Learning Journal Special Conference Issue. • Online Learning Journal (OLJ) Call for Proposals for Graduate Student Presentation Sessions at OLC Accelerate 2017

  The Online Learning Journal (OLJ) in partnership with the Online Learning Consortium invites submissions for the graduate student sessions at OLC Accelerate 2017. The conference will convene November 15-17, 2017 at the Walt Disney World Swan & Dolphin in Orlando, FL. We will be selecting 6 proposals for full presentations and 12 for discovery session presentations, or poster sessions. Please indicate your interest in the presentation format you prefer. We seek proposals that reflect and showcase our vibrant community of practice — promoting theory, research and methodology in online, blended, and web-enhanced teaching and learning. Note that each individual is limited to no more than one proposal submission. Please refer to the CFP on the OLC site as you complete your proposal and prior to submitting your proposal.
